One team at Bredon School’s Tag Rugby Tournament set their sights high when they named themselves after the world’s greatest team – the All Blacks.

Fortunately, their confidence was rewarded because they beat five other teams to win the tournament. But their victory was by no means easy – they tied with two other teams on 10 points and won the competition only when tries for and against were taken into account.

The annual tournament involves boys and girls from Years 6-8 at the independent school at Bushley, near Tewkesbury, as well as visiting individual players from other local schools and sports clubs. At the start of the day, all the visitors are allocated to one of the six teams.

Mike Carolan, the independent school’s Head of Sports, said: “This was a really good event, with everyone giving their best. Tag rugby is a great, fast-moving game, and because it’s a non-contact sport, boys and girls of different ages can all play together.”

The Bank Holiday Monday tournament even featured a Bredon School staff team – the Dreamers – who finished fourth.

Mr Carolan thanked the parents and other volunteers who helped run the event, which was held in the morning, before Bredon School’s May Day Fete in the afternoon.

Attractions at the Fete at the independent school close to Bushley, near Tewkesbury, included children's fairground rides; 4x4 off road driving; air cannon shooting; target golf; pony rides; a vintage tractor parade; quad bikes; a variety of stalls; afternoon teas and a pig roast.
