PE 1Sport has always played an important role at Bredon School. It has a prominent position both in the school curriculum and in our programme of after-school activities.

We are firm believers in the benefits of sport. Children who are fit enjoy proven long-term health benefits. Games such as rugby and hockey teach them how to work as part of a team. There are widespread opportunities for many children to play in fixtures against other schools. However, we recognise that not everyone can play at such a level, so we take care to ensure that lessons are conditioned to the widely varying abilities of our students.

Bredon School has extensive grounds, with a large number of sports pitches, as well as a swimming pool, climbing wall, zip wire and low-level ropes course. There is a modern, 30-metre sports hall and a wide range of sports equipment. Our staff includes a high proportion of teachers who are qualified and experienced in teaching PE and games. As a result of all this, the number of sports offered is very extensive. Here are just some:

  • Rugby
  • Cricket
  • Basketball
  • Hockey
  • Football (soccer)
  • Trampolining
  • Gymnastics
  • Climbing
  • Canoeing
  • Cross-country
  • Swimming
  • Adventure training
  • Badminton
  • Athletics
  • Weight-training

PE 2The school has a longstanding reputation for its rugby, which is the designated major sport for boys in the autumn and spring terms. In recent years, the fast-growing sport of tag rugby has been played in Years 3-6 and is very popular among both boys and girls. Hockey is the major winter sport for girls.

In the summer term, the boys focus on cricket, while the girls take up rounders. The girls also enjoy the chance to play indoor cricket, even in the depths of winter. Hockey and basketball are played as mixed sports at senior level. A sponsored 24-hour girls' basketball marathon has been an annual calendar fixture since 1996.There are regular tour programmes, including a mixed hockey tour for the Sixth Form every two years.

All Bredon pupils up to sixth-form level play several hours of sport each week. For those who would like to study sport, GCSE in PE is a popular option. For students at 16+, sport comes within the AVCE (vocational A level) in Leisure & Recreation. Sixth-formers are also encouraged to work towards the nationally recognised Sports Leader awards, during which they help coach younger children both at Bredon and at local junior schools. Students keen on the great outdoors can pursue the Basic Education Leader Award (BELA), while those who enjoy life in the water can take British Canoe Union (BCU) qualifications or become qualified swimming pool lifeguards.
