The Lower School at Bredon School is for children from Year 3 to Year 9. Children up to the end of Year 6 are taught mainly in their own classroom by their class teachers. From Year 7 to Year 9, children are taught mostly by specialist subject teachers and move around the school from lesson to lesson.Key Stage 2 is led by Mrs Jane Merchant while Miss Madeleine Henton is Curriculum Co-ordinator for Key Stage 3. Lower School teaching follows the National Curriculum, including the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science. However, teachers also have the flexibility to look at other topics outside the strict confines of the National Curriculum. Bredon School pupils do not currently sit the National Curriculum SAT tests for 11-year-olds and 14-year-olds. There are particular advantages to having the division between Lower and Upper Schools at the end of Year 9, rather than the end of Year 6, as in many other schools. Research has shown that many children - and especially boys - struggle when forced to change school environments abruptly at the age of 11. Having the change at 14 introduces greater continuity during the period in Year 7 when children are getting to grips with specialist subject teaching. Parents can speak initially to their child's tutor if they have any concerns, questions or suggestions on day issues. Boarding issues can be directed towards the relevant Houseparent. |
