Bredon School’s new Smart Centre opens PDF Print E-mail
Bredon School pupils Elizabeth Morris and Robert Colcott joined their Principal, David Keyte, to open the school’s new Smart Centre.

Six-year-old Elizabeth and Robert, aged 14, jointly cut the ribbon in a special opening ceremony held on the last day of term at the independent school between Ledbury and Tewkesbury.

The two-storey building is the biggest addition to Bredon School’s facilities since a large classroom block and adjoining sports hall were built in the mid1990s. Built in brick and with a slate roof, it has been carefully designed to match the look of the 1990s building.

On the ground floor is a new Sixth Form Centre, where Years 12 and 13 can relax in their free time, as well as classrooms for Mathematics, Business and Leisure. The Art department is now housed in purpose-built accommodation upstairs, which includes a room that can double up as an art gallery or drama studio. Also upstairs are eight new bedrooms for boarders.

Mr Keyte said: “The new building represents a significant investment for the school. We have been using it for a few weeks - and it is already proving very popular with teachers and the children - but we wanted to have a proper opening ceremony at the end of term when parents and grandparents come along for our Carol Service.”

Mr Keyte explained why Elizabeth, of Droitwich, and Robert, of Bredon, had been chosen for the ceremony: “Elizabeth was selected because, at six years and ten months, she is the youngest pupil here and therefore represents the future of the school.”

“Robert came up with the very clever name of ‘Smart’ in our name-the-building competition. The ‘S’ stands for Sixth Form Centre; the ‘M’ is for the dedicated Mathematics classrooms, while the last part of the word, ‘art’ reflects the fact that our Art department is based in the new building.”

The construction of the new building has also enabled two new Information & Communication Technology (ICT) suites to be installed in the 230-pupil school’s Fred Lambert Building, where the Art department used to be housed. This is part of a major expansion of the school’s ICT facilities over the last six months, which has included investment in interactive whiteboards and the construction of an extension to an existing ICT room to create a new study centre and library.

Bredon School is a day and boarding school welcoming boys and girls aged 6-18. It is located near the Gloucestershire-Worcestershire border in 84 acres of landscaped grounds around the Victorian mansion of Pull Court.
