| Helping our children stay 'cyber-safe' |
|
A special workshop at Bredon School will look at the fast-changing online ‘cyber world’, and help raise awareness among parents, children and teaching staff about the latest internet trends. Organised by Bredon’s active Parents’ Association, it will be led by local policeman Detective Constable James Gordon, who is a specialist computer forensic analyst. The ‘cyber safety’ workshop will cover the general principles of monitoring a child’s life in the online world and will provide specific information about instant messaging, blogs and websites such as Bebo and Facebook. It will include steps that can be taken to safeguard children’s safety. The aim is to make sure that parents have all the information they need to ensure their son or daughter is safe in the online; and also to help pupils to be aware of any potential pitfalls. Bredon School Principal David Keyte said: “There are, sadly, potential dangers for children who spend unmonitored time online. It is therefore essential that children should not be left vulnerable. Trends and fashions move very quickly on the web, and we recognise that it can be hard for adults to keep track of exactly what children are doing online. I was delighted when the Parents’ Association asked to bring in an expert who can give parents and pupils from the School the latest guidance.” The workshop, on Friday, will also look at the role of schools in helping children stay safe on-line and at the support available. Bredon School is an independent day and boarding school for children aged between 7 and 18, at Bushley near Tewkesbury.
