English Department
Learning through fun is key at Bredon School, and it is a philosophy we fully embrace in the English Department.

Good written and communication skills are vital for everyone in life, so in Years 3-6 pupils are taught all the essentials that will help them to succeed in every subject throughout their schooling. Pupils at this stage will also study and be encouraged to love a wide range of texts including novels, plays and poetry.

As they move into Year 7 pupils are taught English as a discreet subject. In small groups and with the help of dedicated, supportive staff, pupils will build on what they have already learned while embracing many more new skills.

The three main strands of English are given equal weighting so that pupils become confident readers, writers and oral communicators. As well as sitting written examinations each year, pupils take part in English Speaking Board exams at various stages. Although we do not ask the pupils to sit the external SATs in English, the schemes of work are designed to fully cover the National Curriculum.

In Years 10 and 11 we offer courses that are tailored to pupils' abilities. Most are entered for GCSE English, with some also taking the Literature qualification. Others embark on Entry Level courses in English.

Those who have enjoyed their studies and decide to stay on post-16 are encouraged to consider an A or A/S Level such as English Language or English Literature.

At every level all pupils are encouraged to make good use of the well-stocked library.
