To celebrate a monumental year of sport, Bredon hosted its very own Olympic Week at the end of June.
With much pomp and ceremony, the week launched in style with the school’s youngest pupil 5 year old Charlie Bowness, carrying one of the torches that was used in the recent torch relay. Following closely behind Charlie were the school’s future Olympic hopefuls – Charlie Vanhoa, Alice Stevens and Jonathon Jones who have all recently qualified to take part in the English Schools National Athletics Finals in July.
All staff and pupils then joined behind the school band to march to the flag pole to watch the Olympics Rings flag be hoisted. The 5-day event, encompassing the school’s annual sports day, was the brainchild of the sports department.
Pupils of various ages worked together in small groups, both on and off-site, to participate in ‘all things Olympian’ including; constructing bicycle-pulled chariots which raced against each other in an inter-house competition on Sports Day. Another group made paddles, using tools to build and decorate it for their own keepsake.
In the art rooms, children created metal and mod rock sculptures of various sporting activities, reflecting the breadth of sports on offer at the school. The theme even reached the cookery department, with children creating a huge Olympic Stadium from sponge cake – complete with spectators, medals and plaques.
As well as the classroom-based activities, there was a tented Olympic Village where year 6 & 7 children camped out overnight. There were equestrian demonstrations, a bell boating event, a gymkhana, a basketball master class with the Worcester Wolves basketball team, target archery, canoe-polo in the school pool, air rifle shooting, water sports including raft building and sailing, polo with an England Polo Team coach, even a trip to Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire to see the gymnastic training facilities.
The week finished with a celebration of the traditional Wenlock Games, and pupils tried their hand at the more unusual ‘sports’ of cream cracker eating, wellie throwing, quoits, boules, one legged tug o’ war and sack racing.
It was a fantastic, memorable week and even the occasional downpours couldn’t dampen the delight and spirit of the children and staff taking part. Well done to everyone who was involved.
