Students study all of the following themes on which the assessments are based. Each theme contains different topics in which new vocabulary and grammar for the four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) are consolidated. Theme 1: Identity and culture (Topics: Me, my family and friends; Technology in everyday life; Free-time activities; Customs and festivals in Spanish speaking countries). Theme 2: Local, national, international and global of interest (Topics: Home, town, neighbourhood and region; Social issues; Global issues; Travel and tourism). Theme 3: Current and future study and employment (Topics: My studies; Life at school; Education post-16; Jobs, career choices and ambitions).
How is the course structured and graded?
There is one exam in each skill (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) at end of Year 11. In particular, the course tests your ability to recall vocabulary for each topic and accurately apply grammar rules. You have to be able to communicate both written and verbally in addition to understanding short extracts of listening recordings and reading passages. Exams last for between 1 hour 15 mins and 20 mins depending on the paper. Higher Tier and Foundation Tier are available.
Will this course be suitable for me?
If you demonstrate good ability in Spanish at KS3 and you have genuine interest in the Spanish language and culture, then this course is for you. It will help develop your communication skills in the second largest language spoken in the world and give you confidence to travel to Spanish speaking countries.
What could this course lead to?
The ability to communicate in a foreign language is a skill for life and something students should enjoy and find rewarding. It is useful for travelling and working in an international environment. An awareness and accumulation of skills provides an excellent foundation to study Spanish at A Level. It is highly valued by both employers and universities.
