Children are welcome to board at Bredon from the age of 9 years old.
We offer a full boarding arrangement, which includes weekends, or we offer flexi boarding which is booked in advance and charged per night. We also offer ‘day boarding’, which enables our day students to stay at school until 7pm to complete their prep or join an activity, and have supper. For costs, please see Fees.
We aim to provide a happy family atmosphere for our boarders, where everyone feels safe and can relax or study in a homely atmosphere. Over 40% of our pupils board with us in some capacity so the boarding environment is both busy and vibrant.
Accommodation is provided in both the historic Pull Court and in specially-designed boarding houses. Boys typically share in rooms of 2 to 4 pupils; for Sixth Form boys, single rooms are available. Due to the layout of Stable House - the girls boarding house - all girls are lucky enough to be allocated their own room. Pupils are encouraged to display personal items, such as photographs and posters in their rooms.
All boarding areas are well staffed and equipped with a games room, reading room, TV and video lounge, and pupil kitchen.
"Pupils benefit from the strong family atmosphere in the boarding houses and the school’s individualised approach to learning and sensitive pastoral care."
Independent Schools Inspectorate, 2018
Our Head of Boarding, Mr Kelvin Summers leads a team of dedicated houseparents who take primary responsibility for the boarders assigned to them. The houseparents are supported by many other staff and are responsible for the children’s care and welfare.
Our boarding staff are experienced in supporting a range of different learning needs, from dyslexia to high functioning autism. Setting fixed rules and routines, which are clearly explained and understood, provides a secure framework for all to thrive.
Our boarding arrangement is rather unique in that our boarding staff are a purely pastoral team and are not actively involved in the day-to-day teaching of lessons. We believe having a purely pastoral team helps our boarders separate school from ‘home’ after a busy day in the classroom. In the background however, the boarding team has strong links with the academic staff to ensure joined-up support and help with coursework and prep, and monitor academic progress.
Bredon was the first school in the UK to have all full-time boarding staff accredited by the Accredited Boarding Practitioner programme run by the Boarding Schools’ Association. This new scheme recognises boarding staff who are personally and professionally committed to best boarding practice and highlights Bredon’s focus on achieving the best outcomes for our boarders.
"I like boarding because you get to spend time with your friends and the houseparents are kind and fun."
After school and weekend activities
Boarders take part in a wide range of after-school activities, including cookery, music, art and craft and sport.
At the end of the school day, boarders go up to their rooms to change. From 5pm to 6pm, they will do prep or take part in organised activities. Dinner is served between 6pm and 6:45pm.
A further hour of prep and/or an activity follows before ‘downtime’ and lights out.
Currently boarders and day pupils are able to enjoy a huge range of after school activities in the week. In terms of sports, pupils can take part in Running Club, Horse Riding, Circuit Training, Boys and Girls Rugby, Golf and Swimming in our outdoor pool (during the warmer months).
In addition to Film and Music Club, pupils can also enjoy Computer Club, Warhammer and Dungeons and Dragons Club, and Cisco Electronics Club.
At weekends, there are no formal school lessons, so boarders can spend their free time enjoying an extensive recreational programme, featuring activities such as bug boarding, laser tag, go-karting, crazy golf, paintballing, swimming, bowling and cinema trips, as well as shopping at local centres such as Cheltenham and Worcester. Boarders can also use our dyslexia-friendly gymnasium (complete with visual charts and QR codes!).
The activities are varied, appealing to both boys and girls, but special girls-only or boys-only events are also arranged from time to time, such as the girls-only spa and pamper party!
All activities are carefully planned, a term in advance, with input from the children to ensure there will be high demand! Day pupils and flexi boarders are all welcome to join in the fun too.
