Beyond the Junior Classroom

At Bredon, we believe some of the most powerful learning happens beyond the classroom walls. In our Junior School (Years 4–6), every day is packed with opportunities to explore, discover and grow in confidence.

A Strong Academic Foundation with Flexibility

English and Maths are taught daily and Science is delivered twice a week, in small class sizes tailored to individual needs. We integrate specialist dyslexia teaching techniques and assistive technologies (such as Nessy, Read & Write, Accelerated Reader and Typing Club) to help every student thrive.

We schedule academic lessons in the mornings, when focus is strongest, leaving the afternoons for more hands-on, creative and outdoor learning experiences.

Outdoor Education as a Core Experience

Outdoor Education is part of the weekly timetable, fully utilising our beautiful 84-acre countryside campus and riverside environment. These activities foster independence, resilience and teamwork. We also run Forest School sessions, with moments for reflection around a campfire, and nature-based learning that complements the core curriculum.

The Working School Farm

Our farm is a treasured part of Junior School life. Students help care for animals – such as sheep, pigs, ponies, poultry – and assist with planting, growing and harvesting crops. Every season brings new learning: lambing in spring, collecting fresh eggs, planting vegetables and seeing them grow. Some children choose to spend extra time on the farm before or after school because they really enjoy being part of this living classroom.

Residential Trips & Adventures

One of the highlights of Junior School year is the annual residential trip, where students spend several days away together taking part in outdoor challenges, team-building activities and new experiences. Whether abseiling for the first time, tackling high ropes or working as a team to complete an obstacle course, these trips create memories that last a lifetime. They also encourage independence, resilience and deeper friendships as students learn to live and work together outside the classroom.

Sport, Clubs & Creative Pursuits

Physical activity is woven into the week with sports lessons at least twice weekly, plus varied games and movement opportunities.

Beyond that, students can join clubs in music, drama, coding, cookery, gardening, art and more. These allow them to stretch their interests, experiment and build confidence outside academics. Displaying artwork around campus, performing in school productions or growing vegetables for a school fair are common highlights.

Pastoral Support & Wellbeing

We believe that children do their best when they feel safe, known and supported. Our small class sizes allow teachers to build strong relationships with each student, ensuring individual care and attention.

Our tutor and house systems provide structured pastoral support and weekly team meetings ensure that any student needing extra care is noticed and supported.

Growing Confidence, Friendships & Character

Beyond academics, this blend of outdoor education, farm life, sport, clubs and pastoral care allows Junior students to discover new interests, make meaningful friendships and develop resilience. Whether building a shelter in the forest, caring for a lamb, scaling a climbing wall or putting on a class performance, these experiences help them grow into confident, capable young learners ready for the next stage of their journey.
