Pastoral Care & Safeguarding

At Bredon, every student’s wellbeing comes first. We believe that children learn best when they feel safe, supported and valued, which is why pastoral care and safeguarding are at the heart of everything we do.

Our Approach

Safeguarding at Bredon is not just about policies – it’s about culture.

We:

  • Provide a safe, nurturing environment where children can thrive
  • Train all staff and volunteers to recognise and respond to concerns
  • Promote kindness, respect and openness across the whole community
  • Carry out rigorous checks to ensure all adults working with students are suitable
  • Regularly audit and review our systems to maintain the highest standards

Above all, our aim is simple: that every student at Bredon feels safe, cared for and ready to flourish — in the classroom and beyond.

This approach has been recognised nationally:

  • 2024 – Winners of the SACPA Outstanding Commitment to Safeguarding Award
  • 2023 – Re-accredited with the Leaders in Safeguarding Award
  • 2022 – Finalists in the SACPA Safeguarding Initiative Award for building a strong, community-wide safeguarding culture

These honours reflect the dedication of our safeguarding team and the high level of training across all staff to ensure every student is safe, supported and able to thrive.

Pastoral Care & Safeguarding at Bredon Junior School

Pastoral Care & Safeguarding at Bredon Junior School

In the Junior School, every child is known as an individual. Small class sizes mean teachers quickly build close, supportive relationships, making sure each student feels understood and secure.

Pastoral care is built into the daily routine. Each child has a form tutor who acts as a consistent guide and first point of contact for families. Wellbeing activities such as circle time, themed wellbeing days and outdoor challenges encourage children to reflect, share and grow.

Safeguarding is woven into every part of Junior School life. Clear routines, approachable staff, and a culture of kindness and respect help create an environment where students feel confident to explore new challenges. Highlights such as the annual residential trip give children the chance to build independence, resilience and friendships in a safe, supportive setting.

Pastoral Care & Safeguarding at Bredon Senior School

As students move into the Senior School (Years 7–11), our pastoral care evolves to reflect their growing independence. Each student continues to benefit from a form tutor, supported by Heads of Year and our wider pastoral team, providing both daily encouragement and longer-term guidance.

The house system fosters a strong sense of belonging and community. Inter-house competitions, assemblies and events strengthen school spirit, while leadership opportunities encourage students to take responsibility and build confidence.

Senior School pastoral care also looks ahead. Students are supported through GCSE choices and exam preparation, and resilience is built through enrichment days, Outdoor Education, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the Combined Cadet Force.

Online safety is a particular focus: it is taught across the curriculum through PSHCE, assemblies and tutor sessions. Parents are kept closely involved through a half-termly safeguarding and pastoral newsletter, offering guidance and resources to help embed safe practices at home as well as in school.

Our Health & Wellbeing Centre

Our Health & Wellbeing Centre

At the heart of our pastoral provision is the Health & Wellbeing Centre based in the heart of the school. It is a safe, welcoming space where students can access medical support, advice or simply a listening ear.

Open from 7.30am to 6pm Monday to Friday, the Centre provides triage facilities, six single recovery rooms and support for routine medication, illness, accidents and referrals to external specialists. Students can make appointments to talk through worries – whether related to health, wellbeing or everyday anxieties – and parents are always welcome to contact the team directly for reassurance.

We are proud that our Health & Wellbeing Centre has been awarded the prestigious Seacole Standard, recognising it as a safe, inclusive and high-quality healthcare environment where students are treated with kindness and respect.

The Centre is led by our experienced nursing team:

Jill Blakeney, Registered General Nurse and a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead. Jill has a background in expedition medicine, renal and rehabilitation care, and a BSA Diploma in School Nursing.
Selena Fletcher, Registered Mental Health Nurse, who has 20 years’ experience in the NHS. I’ve worked for the NHS for the last 20 years and when I came across the job ad for Bredon, I knew it would be perfect for me.
