Beyond the Senior Classroom

Life at Bredon’s Senior School (Years 7–11) is about far more than academic lessons. Students are encouraged to explore their talents, take on new challenges and develop the confidence and resilience that will carry them through to Sixth Form and beyond.

Outdoor Education and Adventure

Outdoor Education continues to play a central role in Senior School life. Students take part in climbing, kayaking, archery, cycling and bushcraft, often working towards ambitious group challenges. Recent highlights have included multi-day expeditions where students navigated across the Brecon Beacons with tents and supplies, testing both their endurance and teamwork.

Problem-solving activities, navigation exercises and survival skills sessions all help students learn leadership and cooperation. The emphasis is on discovery and resilience, giving every child the chance to shine in different ways.

Combined Cadet Force (CCF)

From Year 9, students can join the Combined Cadet Force. Weekly sessions cover fieldcraft, drill, first aid, navigation and outdoor skills, while weekend exercises bring these lessons to life in real environments.

Bredon cadets regularly compete in high-level national competitions, with teams achieving top rankings in events such as the Cambrian Patrol. Beyond recognition, CCF helps students develop leadership, discipline and confidence, with many discovering new strengths in challenging situations.

The School Farm

The School Farm continues to be a highlight of daily life. Senior students play an active role in caring for animals – from lambing in spring to tending pigs, goats, ponies and poultry. Some students choose to take vocational qualifications in agriculture and animal care, while others simply enjoy the responsibility of feeding livestock or working in the gardens.

Many students arrive early to help on the farm before lessons, or stay behind at the end of the day to lend a hand. These experiences not only provide practical skills but also build patience, teamwork and self-reliance.

Sport & Competition

Senior School students take part in a wide range of sports including rugby, football, cricket, netball, athletics and hockey. Alongside traditional fixtures, they enjoy inter-house competitions and opportunities to try new sports such as climbing and clay pigeon shooting.

Recent successes have seen Bredon teams perform strongly in local and regional fixtures, while individuals have gone on to represent the school in national clay shooting competitions. For many students, sport is as much about fun and fitness as it is about competition, with every child encouraged to get involved.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award [is it worth adding a link to 7.7 in School Life section] is a popular choice for Senior students. Many begin with Bronze in Year 9, moving on to Silver in Year 10 or 11. Activities range from volunteering at local charities to learning new skills such as photography or cookery. Expeditions – carrying heavy packs and navigating through challenging terrain – are always a highlight and a true test of perseverance.

Residential Trips & Camps

Senior students also take part in residential experiences that extend their learning and build independence. These include outdoor activity weeks where students challenge themselves with high ropes, climbing and water sports, and subject-focused trips that bring classroom learning to life.

CCF cadets enjoy overnight training exercises and longer camps, where they put fieldcraft and navigation skills into practice. Students completing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award undertake expeditions in areas such as the Brecon Beacons, learning to work together as a team while managing the demands of multi-day treks.

These residential experiences help students to step outside their comfort zones, strengthen friendships and gain the resilience and confidence they need for life’s next steps.

Clubs & Enrichment

Beyond lessons, students enjoy a rich programme of co-curricular clubs. Popular choices include drama, music, coding, debating, art and cookery, alongside outdoor activities such as kayaking, climbing and gardening. Social events and performances give students the chance to showcase their talents and celebrate their achievements with friends and family.

Growing Independence

Beyond the classroom, Senior School students are given space to grow. They learn what it means to take responsibility, to contribute to their community and to persevere when things get tough. Whether representing their house in sport, helping on the farm or completing a demanding expedition, Bredon students develop the skills and confidence that prepare them for life in the Sixth Form and beyond.
