Our School Farm

Learning life skills through the land

Set in the heart of our beautiful 84-acre campus, the Bredon School Farm is home to a wide variety of livestock including:

  • A pedigree flock of Badger Face Welsh Mountain sheep
  • Pedigree herds of Large White pigs and South Devon cattle
  • Shetland ponies and a range of poultry

This working farm offers a unique hands-on learning environment, giving students the chance to explore animal care, horticulture and countryside skills as part of everyday school life.

Weekly farm lessons

From Year 4 through to Year 9, students take part in weekly timetabled farm lessons. These sessions offer real-life experiences that support academic subjects such as Science, Geography and Nutrition.

From Year 10 onwards, students can choose to pursue City & Guilds vocational qualifications in:

  • Animal Care
  • Agriculture (Level 2 and Level 3)

Skills developed on the Farm

Working on the Farm helps students grow in confidence, responsibility and independence. Key skills include:

  • Responsibility: Caring for animals and plants
  • Reasoning & discovery: Hands-on learning in science, nutrition, weather and the environment
  • Creativity: Finding new ways to grow food and care for animals
  • Teamwork: Learning to cooperate and support each other
  • Work ethic: Understanding the value of effort and commitment
  • Physical activity: Staying active while doing something productive
  • Love of nature: Connecting with the outdoors in a safe, calm space

Students gain a strong sense of achievement – from raising livestock to harvesting produce they’ve grown themselves.

Beyond the timetable

The Farm is open to all students as part of Bredon’s extracurricular programme. Animal lovers and budding gardeners are always welcome to:

  • Volunteer before school or during break times
  • Join farm-related clubs and activities
  • Help out during free periods or activity slots

All students are fully supervised and we promote safe working practices at every level.

Real-world learning with real purpose

The school Farm is more than a unique feature of life at Bredon – it’s a place where students grow their confidence, discover their passions and connect meaningfully with the world around them.
