Student at Bredon School 2018 – 2022
Combat Engineer in the British Army
Charlie attended Bredon School from 2018 to 2022, where he discovered a passion for engineering and developed the confidence to pursue a career in the British Army.
During Year 10, Charlie joined the school cadets, an opportunity he had not experienced at his previous schools. Having already been actively involved in the Boys’ Brigade outside of school, he was keen to continue developing his teamwork and practical skills. It was also at Bredon that he was introduced to engineering for the first time. Inspired by an outstanding teacher, Charlie found a subject he truly enjoyed and decided to pursue a career in the engineering field.
In 2024, Charlie joined the British Army and completed his basic training before moving on to the Basic Combat Engineering course. His training included explosives and demolitions, obstacle construction, bridge building, assault boats and a demanding week-long field exercise, where he put his combat engineering skills into practice.
Following his training, Charlie was posted to the Field Army at a base in the north of England, where he settled into military life. Most recently, he completed a Fabrication and Welding course at the Royal School of Military Engineering, a qualification he had been particularly looking forward to as fabrication and welding were key reasons for choosing a career with the Royal Engineers. During the course, he gained experience in sheet metal work, blacksmithing and three different welding techniques.
Charlie will shortly return to 32 Engineer Regiment in Catterick, where he will serve as a Class 2 Fabricator and Armoured Vehicle Crewman. He is excited to put his new skills into practice and continue developing his career within the Army.
Reflecting on his time at Bredon, Charlie credits the school with helping him discover the career path that was right for him. The support he received, particularly in overcoming the challenges of dyslexia, gave him the confidence to achieve his goals. Bredon provided both the qualifications and encouragement he needed to build a successful future, and he remains grateful for the role the school played in his journey.
